We have another florist for you! This time we’ve gone up to the North East of Scotland for our wedding flowers, to speak to Kevin Shand. His work is very well known in Moray and he’s given us a wee insight into his business. So if you’re still at the idea stage for wedding flowers and you’re in the area, do pop in and see him.Winter mantle garland

Hi Kevin,

So Who and What is Room To Bloom, And Where Can We Find You?

Hi, I’m Kevin Shand, proprieter of Room to Bloom, an Elgin based Florist founded by myself. You can find me at 28 Thunderton Place, Elgin, Moray. The business opened its doors on 16th November 2001 and today I employ 3 trained florists as well as two assistants. We specialise in creating unique, high quality arrangements using the best available flowers, and are best known for our stunning wedding flower arrangements.

Wedding flowers at the wedding breakfast2008 proved to be a Royal year for Room To Bloom when we were asked to provide flowers for the Royal opening of the Johnston’s Of Elgin Heritage Centre, by Prince Charles and Camilla. We provided flower arrangements and a bouquet for the Queen’s opening of the Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre earlier that year too.

Why Did You Start Working In The Wedding Industry?

It was sheer chance really! I’d always been interested in plants, gardening and flowers and had been pottering about amongst flowers at home. I was asked to do table centres for a friend’s wedding (which I did) and they were thrilled by the results!

I really enjoyed the challenge and soon afterwards was asked to help a local florist set up weddings – I found this exciting and enjoyable. I then did some training and left my managerial role with a local company in the care sector and embarked on setting up my own business. The rest is history!Phalenopsis Orchid bridal shower bouquet

What’s The Most Challenging Wedding You’ve Had And How Did You Cope?

Every wedding is challenging, that’s one of the things I love about it. We’ve had many themed weddings – a Halloween themed wedding and various vintage style weddings. On one occasion the bride left all the plans to me as she knew in her head what she wanted but couldn’t describe it. So I was really thrown to the lions. I managed to pull it off! She was thrilled! I was relieved and stressed.

What Can You Offer That’s Different Or Unique?

We’ve built our reputation on providing a top quality personal service where our wedding flowers are tailored to suit the needs and budgets of our client. We listen and advise appropriately; it’s not a case of spending a fortune. We want our brides to feel they get what they want, however big or small their budget may be.Wedding flowers church arrangement

What Advice Can You Give A Bride Who’s Not Sure What She Needs?

Just follow these 5 easy steps:

1. Firstly, take your time and don’t get stressed – wait until you’ve got a colour scheme.

2. Start looking through wedding magazines and web sites.

3. When you see photos of bouquets and flowers you like, cut out pictures and get a scrap book going. That’s really helpful when a bride wants me to recreate something she’s seen.

4. Write lists of required flowers such as bouquets, buttonholes, church arrangement, etc.

5. Phone us and make an appointment for an informal chat – take all your ideas and photos with you!Wedding flowers table arrangement
